Parliamentary & Political Life

Member of Rajya Sabha, 1994–1998.

In 1998, was elected from the Mandal assembly constituency, Ahmedabad, and became an MLA. From 1998 to 2002, was Minister of Education (Primary, Secondary, and Adult) and Minister of Women & Child Welfare.

In 2002, became the legislator from Patan Vidhan Sabha constituency for the second consecutive time. Held the portfolios of Education (Primary, Secondary, and Adult), Higher and Technical Education, Women and Child Welfare, and Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities from 2002 to 2007.

In 2007, became the legislator from Patan Vidhan Sabha constituency for the third consecutive time. From 2007 to 2012, held the portfolios of Revenue, Disaster Management, Road and Building, Capital Projects, and Women and Child Welfare.

In 2012, was elected for the fourth consecutive time as MLA from the Ghatlodia assembly constituency in Ahmedabad city, winning the highest number of votes in the state. Held the portfolios of Revenue, Drought Relief, Land Reform, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, Road and Building, Capital Projects, and Urban Development and Urban Housing from 2012 to 2014.

From 22 May 2014 to 7 August 2016, served as the first woman Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Served as Governor of Madhya Pradesh from 23 January 2018 to 28 July 2019, and concurrently held additional charge as Governor of Chhattisgarh from 15 August 2018 to 28 July 2019.

Has served as Governor of Uttar Pradesh since 29 July 2019.

Political Activities

Joined politics in 1987. Held important posts in the BJP, including President of the State Women’s Front, Vice President of BJP’s State Unit, and Member of the National Executive Council of BJP.

Was the only woman from Gujarat to participate in the Ekta Yatra from Kanyakumari to Srinagar conducted by the BJP. Despite threats from terrorists, participated in the flag hoisting at Lal Chowk, Srinagar, on 26 January 1992.

Achievements during CM’s Tenure

• Launched the “Maa Vatsalya” scheme to provide free treatment to poor and middle-class families.
• Launched the “Yuva Swavalamban” scheme to support higher education for poor students.
• Led the campaign for 100% ODF (Open Defecation Free) status in Gujarat.
• Introduced free toll tax (for non-commercial vehicles) in Gujarat.
• Started free cancer screening and treatment for all women.
• Successfully campaigned for consensual land acquisition to enable Narmada water to reach fields through canals and minor canals where land was otherwise unavailable.
• Sanctioned more than 100 town plans in the shortest time.
• Ensured transparent implementation of the Vidya Sahayak Yojana.
• Implemented the Vidya Lakshmi Bond and Vidya Deep schemes.
• Announced the Mata Yashoda Award.
• Promoted the use of technology for process simplification.
• Oversaw the construction of village roads at a cost of Rs. 10,000 crore.

Honors / Awards

• Awarded the ‘Veer Bala’ award in 1958 at the Mehsana District School Sports Festival.
• Awarded the ‘Best Teacher’ award in Gujarat in 1988.
• Honored by the President of India with the national-level ‘Best Teacher’ award in 1990.
• Awarded the Gujarat Government’s ‘Gallantry Award’ for saving two girl students of Mohinaba Kanya Vidyalaya from drowning in the Narmada River.
• ‘Sardar Patel Award’ from Patel Awakash Mandal, Mumbai, in 1999.
• ‘Vidya Gaurav’ award from Shri Taptodhan Brahmin Vikas Mandal in 2000.
• ‘Patidar Shiromani’ award from the Patel community in 2005.
• Honored by the Ambubhai Old School of Exercise, Rajpipla.
• Awarded the ‘Charumathi Yoddha’ Award.

Foreign Travel

• Member of the Indian Government team for the Fourth World Women’s Conference in Beijing, China.
• In 1996, travelled with the Indian Parliamentary Party to Bulgaria. Also undertook study tours of France, Germany, Holland, England, the Netherlands, America, Canada and Mexico.
• In 2002, visited Namibia and South Africa with a team from the Gujarat Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association for their 48th Conference.
• In September 2009, represented Gujarat in the ‘Village India’ programme in London.
• In May 2015, travelled to China with Gujarat’s business delegation as Chief Minister, alongside Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
