Institute Of Para Veterinary Science

The Institute of Paraveterinary Science (IPVS) is an important academic and capacity-building unit of U.P. Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidyalaya Evam Go-Anusandhan Sansthan (DUVASU), Mathura. With financial support under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), I.P.V.S was established in the year 2013 with the objective of developing trained human resources to support and strengthen veterinary healthcare and livestock development services. The Institute addresses an important requirement of the animal husbandry sector—particularly the need for appropriately trained supportive personnel who can work in coordination with veterinary professionals and contribute to the delivery of essential animal health, production, management and extension services at the grassroots level.

Veterinary healthcare is a multidisciplinary service in which veterinarians require the assistance of trained technical personnel for the efficient delivery of clinical, diagnostic, pharmaceutical, reproductive, extension and animal husbandry services. In a large and livestock-dependent state such as Uttar Pradesh, the availability of qualified veterinary professionals at every village and livestock-rearing location is inherently limited. I.P.V.S was therefore established by DUVASU in recognition of the need for trained human resources who can provide primary and supportive veterinary services under the guidance and supervision of qualified veterinarians. Such personnel can serve as an important link between veterinary institutions, veterinary professionals and livestock owners, particularly in rural and resource-limited settings.

At present, the Institute offers two principal academic programmes: the Diploma in Veterinary Pharmacy (DVP) and the Diploma in Livestock Extension (DLE).

The Diploma in Veterinary Pharmacy is a two-year programme followed by a three-month internship. The programme is designed to provide students with foundational knowledge and practical skills related to animal health, livestock and poultry diseases, clinical diagnostic procedures, sample collection, pharmaceutical preparations, compounding and dispensing of medicines, preliminary surgical procedures, artificial insemination and public health-related activities, including awareness and control of zoonotic diseases.

The Diploma in Livestock Extension is a two-year programme focused on developing human resources equipped with basic knowledge and practical competencies in livestock production, animal nutrition, animal husbandry, feed and fodder resources, livestock management, livestock products and their processing, animal health, disease prevention, sample collection, preliminary laboratory diagnosis, pharmaceutical preparations, basic surgical procedures, artificial insemination and semen handling. The programme also emphasizes animal husbandry extension and rural welfare, thereby preparing students to communicate scientific livestock-management practices to farmers and livestock owners.

The Institute's educational programmes are also aligned with the broader objective of creating employment-oriented, skill-based human resources for the livestock and animal health sector. Graduates trained in veterinary pharmacy and livestock extension can potentially contribute to animal health establishments, livestock production systems, pharmaceutical and allied industries, extension programmes and other sectors associated with animal husbandry, subject to applicable regulatory and professional requirements. The combination of classroom instruction, laboratory exposure, practical training and internship-based experience is intended to help students develop the competencies required for responsible professional support in animal healthcare and livestock services.
